HOW TO PREVENT THE “MASKNE” PROBLEM ?

During this complicated period of the covid-19 crisis the mask is very important to keep us in good health. In everyday life this accessory is always with us in the workplace, in the transport, in the shops, we don't leave home without it. It has even become a real fashion accessory for some people who don’t hesitate to invest in fashionable and original masks.

What is the “MASKNE”?

“Maskne” is an acne or other skin irritation on the lower face resulting from wearing a mask, particularly a medical mask or cloth mask. This phenomenon is increasingly prevalent among the general population during the covid-19 epidemic due to the widespread use of face masks to protect against the coronavirus.

Unfortunately the skin and the mask do not mix well. It's proven that it can cause problems that range from acne and peeling skin to rashes and itchiness.

Due to face masks your skin becomes damp, especially the part you wear your mask. This excess moisture is not a problem if you wear a mask for a short period of time but if you wear the mask for several hours, the excess moisture can lead to rashes and skin irritation.

This is why your skin care routine must be modified and adapted when you are wearing a mask. We are going to share with you some tips to prevent the “maskne” which we are sure will help you in this difficult period.

Wash your hands

The first advice we can give you is to wash your hands well. We keep hearing everyone telling us to wash our hands to slow the spread of the virus but it is also very good advice for the skin. Wash your hands regularly but especially before applying your care products to your face! It’s very important to avoid putting bacteria on your skin that could cause pimples. Also remember to wash your mask if it is washable.

Choose the right mask

Wear the right mask to reduce skin problems, look for masks with a comfortable fit and at least with two layers of fabric. Opt for a soft, natural, and breathable fabric, such as cotton or silk on the inside layer (that touches your skin), which will limit the spread of bacteria on your skin.

Use a gentle and regular skincare routine

You should opt for a pared-down routine composed of skin-friendly and gentle products such as a gentle cleanser, hydrating toner, light serum or gel moisturizer and sunscreen, only the ones which are essentials. Prioritize skin-soothing ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, aloe, and niacinamide and products with natural ingredients such as our Revitalizing Eye Cream, which is composed with skin-friendly ingredients.

The two most important things to include in your routine are:

  • Skin cleaning - gently cleanse your skin with fragrance-free cleansers to remove sweat and any remaining excess caused by your mask

  • Moisturization - applying moisturizer before and after wearing a mask can prevent problems and adds a protective layer. Take care of your lips too by applying a moisturising balm as the mask dries out the lips.

Also, you can wait five minutes after the application of skincare products before putting on your mask in order to allow the products to absorb into the skin.

Avoid anything that may damage your skin

The skin is already irritated by the mask friction, it is therefore necessary to avoid things that can cause even more damage.

Avoid using harsh scrubs, heavy exfoliants, thick creams and products containing perfume, alcohol and comedogenic ingredients.

As regards to the makeup it’s better if you avoid applying it under the mask as this can clog pores and cause breakouts. In case makeup is necessary, use light formulas and only products labeled “non-comedogenic” or “won't clog pores” and apply it only to exposed areas.

Despite the complicated situation in which we all have to live, many solutions exist to take care of your skin and protect it. The most important thing it’s to take the time to follow a good skincare routine regularly. You can also take a 15-minute mask break every 4 hours, but remove your mask only when it’s safe to do so and after washing your hands.

We hope these tips to prevent the “maskne” are going to help you.
